My reactions to the two articles on the President

My reactions to the articles on President Pratibha Patil
This month I received two articles on Pratibha Patil and her tenure as president. These were not only factual but revealed a sordid state of affairs .w.w.w..Sandeep web .com titled the article ‘Shame on you Madam. The fact is it should have been in the plural because there is more than one Madam involved for this state of affairs. The second article –on open letter addressed to the President (author name not given) contoured other dimensions of the President’s affairs. To me these two articles showed how low we have fallen and how hurt we Indians are to have a person in the name of Pratibha Patel thrust down our throats as a President. What have we done to be so shabbily treated? These two madams will go down in Indian history as having harmed and fleeced the nation more than the foreign invaders had
Does India-this great nation not deserve a better candidate as President than Partibha Devising Patel? Should all these postings from top to bottom be distributed by St Manio as though she brought these as part of her Italian dowry? We the people have a say and we have a democracy which Mrs Sonia Gandhi has thrown out, shredded and fabricated into an unrecognizable dynasty polity. With no governance but only a supreme power which she holds. It is a pity that the millions of Indians are tolerating this power centre- this abuse and misuse of power. After all, Mrs Sonia Gandhi is just the president of a political party (and we know how and why she became the President of the Congress party) and an MP. The fact that she occupies No 10 Janpath itself is a travesty of justice. She should be allotted an MP’s bungalow and nothing more. All the assets-the moveable and the immoveable assets belong to the people of India. So what claim has she to No 10 Janpath? It this unjust claim and unjust occupancy that is an exteriority of an unjust power centre. This enables her to distribute assets and positions at her whims and fancies. This must stop .This is a prelude to the present President’s occupancy and kind of life style. This is because of Mrs Sonia Gandhi and hence ‘shame on you madam must be first directed against her.
Never in India’s history had we such a person as Pratibha Patel a president who was least worthy of the chair. Her record of performance/rather non performance is there to testify. Yet she had no qualms to straight away hike her salary 300 times. This when she is fully aware of the discussion on fixing the Poverty line at 32 Rs per day. What justification is there when millions are below the PL for her to hike her salary300 times. Is the 22.3 crores not sufficient for her that she had to go in for a salary hike?.Is she sweating it out-What is her performance record? This mind you when the PL is at Rs 32.No single person with some sort of a conscience would give herself such a hefty salary hike.
We are morons watching all this and more. What rationale is there for her to go an a spending spree holidaying in resorts and in any fanciful place she wishes when people are slogging-sweating and yet find no solace to sit back and have a rest? Why had she to tax us a whopping 106 crores for her foreign trips? Is it not sinful? Why had she to race towards breaking the record of all the previous Presidents in this area? What did she achieve?
Why had she to occupy Rashtrapati Bhavan with her extended family? Why was it renovated at the cost of the tax payers’ money by a few crores. All this comes easily to her because she has no conscience. Yes I repeat she has no conscience. One with a conscience would think twice and would not misuse the Presidency and abuse it this way .It does not matter whether she was a good cook or not and it does not matter if she was the kitchen maid for Indira Gandhi. But if this is her only qualification then it matters. If her only credit score is that she was a faithful server of Mrs Sonia and the family then it must hurt us for being so grievously sinned against.
But all this again simmers down when one thinks of her callousness in grabbing the Defence land of 2,61,000 square feet allotted to build houses for the armed forces .One would think that she as the chief of the Armed forced would be delighted to at least perform this one single task and see that the poor jawans guarding her and the country would have decent houses .No she had to snatch that too because she was living by the pavements before she became the President and now after her presidency is over the poor woman has to go back to the pavements. Is that not an insult to the people of India hence she wanted a palatial bungalow with over 2 lakh square feet fortified for her use. After all no one would grudge her a modest bungalow but not this avarice in grabbing defense land at the cost of the jawans who have no say. Is this the way we treat them- reward them?
All this goes to show that Pratibha Patel was most ill suited to occupy the chair of the President. She was like a spoilt brat let loose in Disney land running hither and thither wanting to go down to bottom of the sea and fly high above in the most modern/sophisticated jet. She was using her power just to satiate her selfish, childish desires. Unmindful of the cost and unmindful of the sacred post she holds.
Did she pause one moment and realize that she has to reflect the India that she represents? This is an aspect of her personality that will reveal a most selfish-vested interest person. She as a woman did not have an iota of empathy to the millions of women of this country. She as woman did not feel the sensitivity of hunger-starvation, lack of basic needs, orphans and cripples that crowd our streets highways and byways. She did not have the least qualm to spent money on her vanity and grandeur at the cost of these dumb people-voiceless and powerless. This is the sinfulness of her person. It is a shame that we had her as a president. And the basic cause for this is Mrs Sonia Gandhi and hence I dare to say shame on her for treating the India citizens this way and shame on Pratibha Patil for misusing the position. This is a breach of trust-a travesty of justice and a betrayal of the nation-Will the two madams then not be called upon to account for these sins against the nation ?
Cry my beloved country.

Pune is a very important military station (I say this as a person who has lived there as an AFMC M.D. student’s wife during ’76/77) One batchmate got married after getting assurance from two friends that the newlyweds could park themselves with them till the course was over.
There was acute shortage of accomodation, according to reports things have got worse. To think that she cares little for those who have to salute her..Having once begun an act of injustice, they could set no bounds to it – dissipating public treasure with most senseless extravagance.

thank you Chitra-you should know from your first hand knowledge. It is a pity that Pratibha Patel as the chief Commander had failed even to right the wrong-to give the basic requirements for the jawans who slog and sweat it out-nay protect the country. This woman has no sensitivity to others and forgets and fails in her duty and responsibility.Poor we.All the best to you.HR

I have been leaving comments as ‘Dakul’ earlier as my eccentric professor of English had warned us not to tell anyone who taught to write. I can say with complete honesty that writing is a direct result of experience as a Medical Specialist’s wife..meeting people and often compelled to tell a story.
I often say it is a life that “civilians” don’t understand. I wanted to test all those journalists commenting about troop movements, if they could recognise naval or air force officers’ rank by the uniform.
Today the President has signed on the dotted line to make Sachin Tendulakar and Rekha to make them Rajya Sabha members. We behol
d this without emotion because we have got so used to such practices.

You write very well and aptly express your thoughts.Yes Sachin and Rekha are the new Rajya Sabha MPs-what else would you expect from this UPA-especially the Congress. All glamour and no substance.Sachin is too young to be in the RS and then what can he contribute in the RS-similarly Rekha.Mrs Sonia Gandhi is just distributing these as though they are her own personal property.Favours lavishly bestowed with no thought of the impact.RS has become now a gallery of men/women who are just faces for exhibit.Thank you Chithra. All the best to you.HR

Do you call the free lease allotment for life as “grabbing”. Do you have any idea why she did not prefer to, so called, “grab” in New Delhi. Is Delhi land cheaper than Pune land?
Government has to provide her residence. It has to do so in government land. Is defence land not of Government? When was that land allotted for houses of Armed forces?

While singling her out, you forgot V.V. Giri. The presidents have been rubber stamps. She was elected by UPA. Congress party selected her. Not even one constituent party of UPA opposed her selection. So there was some political worth in her. We don’t need to keep harping about her during 5 year term and earlier to reinforce false allegation called ‘grabbing’.

Dear Sridara good you put across your point of view. But this Presdient had no other qualification than being a good kitchen server to the Gandhis. Her family’s scams-involvment in suspicious deals-what had she done in her tenure? Why had she to top the list of all Prsidents in her expendicture on foreign trips. This is the time when Rs 32 is fixed as the PL.No she showed no sensitivity.Yes Giri was a rubber stamp. But then political parties want rubber stamps. To pass off Pratibha Patel in comparing her with Giri is no consolation.Don’t forget that Afzal Guru and Kasab’s SC sentences are awaiting. She did nothing but treat herself and her extended family to the Disney land of Rasthrapathi Bhavan at the cost of the poor tax payer.Thank you for your point of view-that was an input to give a balance.HR.

I have no reason to support her expenditure on trips except to say we are accusing her moral behavior not legal behavior. Whole government and elections are at the cost of tax payer. All that was permitted by our constitution. Has she escaped from her constitutional role any time?

Kasab case is not yet finalised by SC? How can this be with her? You do not seem to be well informed of news. There are more than 50 clemency requests pending. Why did you choose Afzal Guru and Kasab? .

You miss the important starting point of blame game Are you right to accuse her of “grabbing”?

Did you read today’s news of her relinquishing Pune home?
How true is your conclusion that the land was marked for residence of Armed force?

  • 8. hilda raja  |  April 28, 2012 at 1:52 pm

Thank you for update.Yes I read the papers that she relinquished the Pune grounds.Better late than never.’Grabbing’ was used because what the media gave was four times more than what she rightful deserved. She is entitled about 4500sq ft-but this came in lakhs.May be I should not have used grabbing. But then she is the chief of the armed forces and what she takes is for ‘grabs’ even if she desired does not fall under the usual ‘grabbing’Thank you for bringing this to my notice. All the best to you.HR

You have almost echoed my thoughts in your thought provoking article on Pratibha Patil. Now as a political scientist,I do agree with Prof.Rajni Kothari that the hallmark of India,s political culture is tolerance and he has listed 7types of them.Without going into that-I feel that what has been most virtuous has become a curse for us.Our tolerance has made us the laughing stock of the world and the way politicians have exploited democracy for their own vested interest has crossed all its limits.French were lucky not to have the kind of traits of tolerance otherwise we would have been deprived of the French revolution.Religion + Democracy has become a great shock absorbers for our people hence revolution is a far fetched dream. They say a fire from 12″bore can kill the tiger but that can never be true against the breed of our politicians-they are ultimate in thickness.

    Dear Dr.Mrs. H. Raja,
May I permit to react to your open letter to President Patil and as well to those who raise questions as to why we lament on her personal probity as she has not done something that is questionable as per the Constitution.
At the out-set I would like to make a declaration. My medium of instruction being French, my writing in English might smell some Frenchization of English and mistakes too-in-expression and for which I seek your indulgence and forbearance with my thanks in advance.
Having that said, everyone has a reason to react to any abberation by a public personality. Me too, I am no exception. Having been born as twins with a sister along with me to a middle-class parents from the South, I could not take the path of a childhood wish and a dream to pursue medicine. My twin sister too nurtured the same taste. Born in an upper caste family, despite obtaining ranks in HSC and passing entrance examinations, capitation or more decently called “something” to the management of medical institutions was the thing that our parents could not satisfy for two at the same time! We appeared for AFMC competitive examination and got selected. Happy to have had at least got a chance to pursue our dreams, we went to Pune! Everything was fine. Honest AFMC. Straight forward talks. We were told that places being very limited for the hostel accommodation, we had to make our own lodging arrangements! The rent being so high our parents had to make a choice-either she or he – naturally the vote went towards my sister and I had to bury my dreams! I have no grudge towards my sister and I am happy she is a Neuro-Surgeon today! I am either to blame on myself, as I forced myself to another line, by getting out of India on scholarship, to become a Charted Accountant and to work in Paris. One may ask so what? Here is the thing. The non fulfillment of a child hood ambition still stays as what we call as la boule in my throat! It’s here precisely that when I read the President having attempted to siphon away the most rarest thing called land in Pune, my anger resurfaces as it was for this I was deprived of the pursuit of my ambition. That too, when I take note of the arrogance of this lady not even to present her regrets to the armed-corps for attempting to squat its land, my anger transcends into disgust. She regretted on the polemic that it created but not for her pollute-intentions!

Now, on to those who defend her position. The argumentation put forth being if she has done any misappropriation Constitution per se? Theoretically may not. Morally Yes. Ethically yes and yes! The house being built for her, am I to believe that she was not consulted? That she did not give her consent on the location? On the architectural design? That she did even bothered to verify the owner of the land? That her umpteen technical staff not put in a note all the vital information? That someone else decided in her place and choice? As the First Lady of the nation, if this callousness is not a dereliction of duty, what then it is? The Constitution starts with her oath in which she has said that she will take all decisions after applying fully her mind and conscience! When she says not have known, therefore, not to be blamed, is she lying now or lied at the time of oath taking?
The list of her malafide intentions and actions are exhaustive: the cooperative bank loot, the personal use of official air-plane for private use….brief, the less said is the better! It’s specifically here my disgust becomes dislike for the very personality!
Sarkozy lost his elections in thin margin of less than 3%. Why? Lack of morality in his personal life. Majority of French approve his drastic political actions. The thin margin reveals this! Same time it sanctions his actions-in-office to have divorced and to have taken an Italian-foreign lady with questionable-moral-character as his wife! The French had shown that morality and probity of public figure do count! The same with Jacques Chirac. Once out of office he was tried as per law for his misappropriations and was declared culpable and punished! Once out of office will the Indian judiciary treat President Patil the same way? The trait in every Indian makes him believe in Satyameva jayate! Hope that this will also apply to future-ex-President!
To please bear with for the length of my reaction.
    Thanks
    Regards
    R. Ram

Thank you Ram for sharing your personexperiences.Lack of public accountability-lack of sensitivity on spending the taxpayers money, lack of probity in public life and above all lack of a consceince and a moral code-these are the inherent values lacking in our leaders who hold public office.Your English was good and your long response a welcome educative input.Thank you very much

democracy in india is a joke. in fact democracy itself is a facade for those who are privileged and powerful to rule over majority.Anthony wedgewood Benn.a great english parliamentarian very rightly said that parliament rule is not working and we need a modern day Oliver Cromwell to replace it.

Dear Mahendra-there is no democracy inIndia-look at the petrol hike made outside Parliament-When Parliament was in session till the day before yesterday the Congress waits for the session to be over and makes this important and disturbing hike announcement ouside Parliament. It is always a EGoM which take the call. What is the cabinet doing and why the ministries? Why Parliament. This is a banan republic-only solace is the judicary. The UPA 2 is paying with the nation’s intergrity and sovereignity of the people. It is Mrs Sonia who calls the shots. This is bad for democracy. And the PM is a robot-see no evil, speak no evil and hear no evil-just move on automatically.
Thank you for sharing. All the best to you.HR
