The poster said it all ‘Hazrat Maulana Gulam Mohammad Vastanvi Sahib’ “YOU GO AHEAD INDIA WITH YOU”. Yes truth cannot be sliced into half truths and truth cannot be buried.It is honesty and integrity which prompted Maulana Gulam Mohammad Vastanvi to state what he stated-that there is no discrimination in Gujarat against the Muslims and that Gujarat has developed. That one has to move on and cannot be in freezed framed of Gujarat riots. He also said that riots anywhere be it in Gujarat or elsewhere is a blot. Muslims in Gujarat have developed. These are simple and plain truths. A man of the stature of Mohammad Vastanvi cannot politicize truth. He stands out as a man of impeccable character and one most fitting to lead his people. The true spirit of Islam flowed from him. There is forgiveness-hope and truth-there is no place for revenge and vengeance and hatred. Now does the Muslim community want the former or want to be dragged and anchored by the latter? Does it want to be narrowed down and live within a fixation with hatred biting at the heart. Is that Islam? Is that what the Prophet wants of his people and its leaders?
The NGOs who are supposed to fight for Peace and Justice have their own agenda. Vested interest makes them run around in circles without allowing the majority of the Muslims to carry on with the main stream of the people of Gujarat. A litmus test is- stop all money and foreign funds that flow into the kitties of these NGOS and then all the Peace and Justice which they say they hold on to and fight for, will evaporate.
It is a great honor for the Muslim community to have a man like Mohammad Vastanvi at the helm of affairs as the Vice Chancellor of the Darul Uloom Deoband seminary which trains young people. To place road blocks on his path and to misinterpret his statements simply because they do no suit their own vested interest is doing great harm and injury to the welfare of the community especially its youth.
Gujarat riots were not the first of its kind in Gujarat. For that matter all over India we have seen communal riots erupting and the suffering of people. The politicians have made it worse by augmenting their divisive politics again for their own vested interest. Vote bank politics is the cruz of the problem.It is not pro-Modi and anti-Modi which is the cause. For the vote bank politics Modi becomes the red rag because he has tried and is trying his best to erase the ghettos, to pull down the fences and walls of caste and creed and draw all people alike into the main stream of development. Any true leader of national stature would welcome this and Mohammad Vastanvi has. He refused to be ghettoed and biased. In him one sees the hall marks of a great and true leader. May his tribe increase!

thank you Sivaraman,You are right-it is not actuality or truth that matters-it is Modi-anythiong good in Modi land must be decried and any stick is good enough to hit at Modi.Vastanvi’s said the right things.But he is under pressure because the Muslims want to stay freezed in Gujarat riots of 8 years ago.I am in Gujarat and I can vouch that there is absolutely no discrimination.Modi is not petty and as the CM he wants all the people of his State to prosper.He is an iron man and has taken quite a good battering in his stride.All the best to you.

Here is an educated muslim leader making a truthful statement, unafraid of the criticisms from his own people as well as being ready to sacrifice his post.
He seems to reflect the views of many such educated muslims about forgiving and going forward in respect of the Gujarat riots. Ad nauseum , it has been explained that the riot was a reaction to the Godhra train massacre of the innocent women and children and since then Modi has been going about making amends to that by bringing Gujrat to the no 1 position in the country and also treating all the people of Gujarat in the same way irrespective of religion,caste,creed etc.
As you have rightly said, the so called NGOs have their axe to grind on Modi and keep on harping about non issues.
Of course our electronic media also while not giving importance to the “hail Gujarat development” speech of Mr.Vastanvi, they gleefully splashed the news of his resignation!
So much for neutrality of media!
May the tribe of Vastanvi flourish!

People-nay politicians seem to forget that the Gajarat riots was a backlash of the Godra carnage.58 bodies were charred beyond recognition-and not a tear shed-no consolation to those families which lost their loved ones.What was their crime?First one must answer that before they talk of Gujarat riots and Modi.Modi did not instigate any riots.The people reacted as humans-when there is a backlash it is going to be much more brutal-because the pain and hurt and bitterness gives it addition sting.This is human psychology.But the Gujarat riots is being too poliitcised and stretched beyond a point it boomerangs.Modi as CM has been working hard and there is not a single scam or corruption taint in him.Why not appreciate what is good and leave history to judge the Gujarat riots and move on with our lives.If one has to be fixed with riots then the genocide of the Sikhs should have banished the Congress party fromt he political arena.There has been more riots during the Congress regime than in non-Congress period.Even in Gujarat the 2002 riots are not the first communal outburst.The Gujarat riots have been used to undermine demoralise the police force in Gujarat.History sheeters like Sorabuddin’s alleged fake encounter is given so much of time and media coverage.Is there a single State where there are no encounter deaths?The usual strategy of the police is to use one gang of goons against the other and then eliminate the ones they used.I know of cases in Tamilnadu where this has happened.Every State has its list of police encounter deaths and police custodial deaths.But it is only in Modiland that thingss become hot.Globally Modi is recognised as an efficient and able administrator-can anyone point out at one scam that has tainted him?The simple fact is that Modi is too strong and too good and cannot be unseated through honest means hence this media bashing and the Centre’s step-motherly attitude towards Modi.It will not pay.

Thirumaran-you reakly instil confidence in me.At this age I cannot be egoistic but as a human person I do love to get encouragement.Seeing the country go to the dogs bleeds my heart when I feel so helpless.Persons like you can do a lot-like a stone thrown in the waters it will make ripples that are ever widening.Thats the thought which keeps me going.I had actively participated in roadside dharans,sit down strikes and even gone to the higher ups taking great risks.But then years have rolled by and now I am with my computer-( though not very good at it)to continue my activism till I can physically.Thats the least I can do for my people and my motherland.Your response comes like a pep!So it invigorates.
I have sent my articles to most of the dailies(-English)-not one has publised and though many like Shankar had wished to see me on the electronic media panelsit will not frutify because you know the reason.Had I taken a pro-minority stand I would have hogged the lime light being a minority myself.But my people are those Indians who are struggling for a daily bread-those who have no voices and cannot be heard and they are Indians with no tags.At the present my heart goes out to the Hindus because they are being persecuted and marginalised.I stand by them.My rich heritage and my legacy left by the ancestors are being vandalised,demeaned and degraded.Hinduism is the oldest religion in the world and it sprung from this soil-it enriches and unfolds the aspirations of Indians down the centruies.It cannot be destroyed or marginalised.To be a Hindu today is to be targetted and marginalised.This is treachery.I feel angry and sad.

Ma’am as I have earlier said I had been reading your Letters To The Editor on ‘The Hindu’ during late nineties when BJP was in power and ‘The Hindu’ was at its shrillest. Your letters were, then, a whiff of fresh air actually, sane voices, though only a few, could still be heard.
I still keep clippings of some of your letters, ma’am.
I was actually worried your letters disappeared altogether. Only recently I found your blog and God, I’m really happy to read your wise and brave musings again and also to talk to you through your blog.
No matter how old you are (age is not really a big factor), and, no matter how many people read, I request you that you, please, continue writing. Wisdom will prevail!
At least I hope it does. And more people will take notice of you.
I suggest, if I may, that you write your views to the “Tughlaq’, the Tamil weekly.

Succintly put Mr.Thirumaran. I earnestly wish the Barkhas, The Arnavs and the Rajdeeps of the Engllsh electronic media have the guts to call this wonderfully secular professor for debates in their channel s so that millions of viewers get the true picture.

This may look a bit funny or secular or wharever; for me it is purely frustrating. Why is it that the gujrat riots are remembered and commented upon without any even passing reference to those who were burnt alive for their greatest sin…and that is being a hindu in India.
It was a revenge and nobody is free from the itch of revenge. Jesus takes it by saying “forgive them father………” Gandhi takes by throwing the british out of india and a not so highly accomplished soul takes it by simpler means.
Certainly reactions are wrong but at the first place ACTIONS are wrong. Therefore if we dont want the riots we have to not-want the godhras.

It is simple-Godhra mention and kept alive will not bring votes but Gujarat riots is vote bank garnering and also it is a channel for funds to flow.The NGOs are minting money on this and the ordinary muslims are kept in the dark.Repeatedly the videos are being shown of selected pictures.Horror stories of brutality inflicted are kept repeated-even if it is not true.
This is one in the agenda of appeasement politics.Take for example even when muslim leaders had brought it to the notice of the GOI that subsidy for Haj is unislamic they keep increasing the subsidy.If the muslims use that money which they have not earned-there is no benefit to them.But every year the number of Haj pilgrims are increased and why do they do-either for business or just sight seeing because according to their religion going with money which they have not earned will not bring them salvation.Still the GOI spends crores of the hard earned money of the tax payers.
Gujarat riots is and will be kept alive to bash Modi as though he supervised the riots But the Congress leaders did personally supervise the butchering of Sikhs in 1982 Similarly no mention of the brutal murder of Swami Lakshmananda in Khandammal-no action taken for this gruesome murder-but the culprits involved in riots and killing dalit christians action has been taken putting the cases on fast track.Does the value of life depend on the religion of the victim?Justice for all is guaranteed by the Constitution but we find that Justice is reserved only for the Muslims.Are they special creatures?

Ma’am, You have presented the matter in the proper perspective. which is also objective,therefore the Truth.I had had a conversation with a person,who believed that there are versions of Truth,depending on who presents it.According to her “Even truth is relative to perception”.While my argument was that “Truth is Absolute.Only perspectives differ.The view that is fair and just to all at all times is True.” Your answers to the comments seem to validate my view on “Truth”.I am sorry for digressing into philosophy ,but I feel that these concepts and how we define them are the basis to the way we deal with and solve the Problems that we face in our Polity and Soceity/Community.Many times people shy away from defining the problem properly and then bemoan that they could not solve it.This is also true in our Society.We don’t define them because of a mistaken sense of Political correctness which prevents us from calling a spade a spade and taking assertive action.[Here ‘we’ is used generally/not specific to anyone,except the so-called Seculars].This is where we learn from you ma’am.Thank your continuing efforts to teach us.
